Bird Goddess Talisman
Bird Goddess Tribute (composed by the late Judith Schiavone)
I stand with my arms raised to the sky
Heralding power and courage.
My spine
Arched like a bow
Quivers as the arrow flies freely.
My belly
Full of grace, abundance,
Seeds I promise.
My legs rooted in Earthsalts.
I stand in a circle unbroken by time
Looking skyward.
Bird goddess is sacred
My domain
Invokes the heavens
Bringing the vast canopy
Of the sky closer to Earth.
A feather falls to the ground
And is placed in the vessel
Fusing the sculpture’s spirit With matter.
Feathers are Sacred.
The stones are cast,
Come forth and close the circle.
Raise your arms up to the sky,
Find comfort in your courage.
Walk upon this Hallowed path unbroken.
All is sacred…
The Egyption Bird Goddess from Ma’Mariya is widely recognized as an ancient earth goddesses. Similarly styled figures discovered in the burials of the Naqada culture of predynastic Egypt. She is a mix of elements from different figures, including the Nile Goddess. Her beak like head and wing like arms that give her bird like characteristics mean that she is often interpreted as a Bird Goddess. Human/bird like figures have been seen within a number of prehistoric cultures, often represented a dual symbolism. On one hand they were a giver of life and spinner of fate, and on the other a symbol of death, a vulture or carrion eater, and therefore a symbol of regeneration.
